So what is content marketing? How do you use content to grow your online business? What specific types of content should you be producing in order to actually attract attention, create impact, and get sales? I’m going to cover 3 content buckets that you need to be using to market yourself online and how to be effective at each of them,

  1. Sell your story

Too many people approach content from the perspective of a marketer. “Hey, I’m Cameron Phillips, and I have something to sell you.” Great - but so does everyone else. What makes that special?

The way to break through the monotony of thousands of people in your face telling you to buy things is to instead create content that simply shares the story of who you are and the journey that you are on as an individual first, and a business owner second. When you create content that is centered around that journey, your audience can form a deeper connection to you, and begin to organically learn your values, what you care about, and what you have to offer.

So how do you accomplish this?

The first questions you need to ask yourself is, what types of content do you resonate with? The right medium is the one that you’re going to consistently show up on and like to create on. For some people that’s video, and for others that’s audio. Some people want to write a blog and others only want to be on Instagram. I’m not going to sit here and lecture you about how you need to be everywhere, but what I will say is that once you pick the platform you’re going to make content for, you need to learn how to be the most effective on that platform. Different platforms perform better to different versions of storytelling, and you want to make sure that you’re creating the best story for the platform you’re using.

Creating a narrative around your business and bringing your customers along for the journey - the highs, the lows, the struggle and the triumph, is a fantastic content bucket to use to market yourself online.

  2. Content Built for Search

How many times do you search on Google on any given day? Personally, I think I am probably in the 20-40 times range, and I know that there are days when that number is way higher.

Why do people search? People generally search to find answers to questions, and as a content creator, you need to create answers to what your audience is searching for.

There are a couple things that happen when you create content built for search. Firstly, you are building content around things that people in your niche are looking for, and positioning yourself as an authority figure on that topic. Second, you are creating the opportunity for new clients and customers to discover you through search and become familiar with what you have to offer. Third, you are laying the roots to long term streams of traffic that can continue to flood into your business from a well-positioned piece of content that ranks on search.

So how do you build content for search? You work backwards.

Start by investigating what people in your niche are looking for by putting yourself in the shoes of the people you are trying to reach. What are they struggling with? What are they looking for help with? What questions are they asking? Take those questions, and start exploring the auto-generated search results that come up. When you find things that you can speak to, start planning to make content answering those questions from your perspective.

Like everything in the world of content, the medium that you choose will determine the specific actions you need to take to create content that is the most effective for search on that platform, but starting with a good topic that people are searching is always a great first step.

This is such an important content bucket.

  3. Deliver Value

Delivering value means creating content that you audience can directly benefit from. When you create content with value, the audience gains a deeper understanding for who you are and what you have to offer, and seeing the results of the work you do.

What does delivering value look like as content?

Value can take many different forms - value can be given in a video that answers a question, value can be given in podcast that shares a story; the value of the most importance to your brand will reflect what you have to offer.

Value is also showing people the work you do, rather than just telling them that you do it. If you’re a coach, start creating content taken directly from the work you do - rather than just creating content that tells people you’re a coach, show them.

Delivering value to your audience is what turns an audience member into a customer.
